Shelley Cano, LPC
Shelley has been in the mental health field for over 22 years. She started her career at Heart of Texas Region Mental Health Mental Retardation, as a case coordinator for the Home and Community-based Services Program. Within this program she assisted individuals with mental retardation and mental illness, to be more independent. Through this job Shelley learned much about empowerment, being an advocate and helping others to find their voice. At MHMR, Shelley also worked as an on-call specialist to provide crisis intervention for clients after regular business hours. While completing her Master's degree, she started her practicum at The Freeman Center. Shelley served as a counselor in several departments there and gained extensive knowledge of substance abuse and treatment. She counseled clients while encouraging them in their recovery efforts. She also conducted educational groups on empowerment, anger management, stress reduction, communication skills and substance-abuse. Shelley also assisted in the development of the children's program and held the title of Co-occurring Psychiatric and Substance-abuse Disorders Counselor. She held weekly groups with the children on building character and making good choices. As the COPSD counselor, Shelley educated clients on the link between drug use and mental illness. She helped clients to better understand mental illness and assisted them in connecting to resources in their community. Shelley was employed by AFGO Counseling Resources as a counselor for youth and adults for 2 years. She has owned and maintained the private practice Shelley Cano, LPC, for the last thirteen years specializing in family and individual counseling for children, adolescents and adults. Shelley has a passion for working with at-risk youth as well as Juvenile offenders with behavioral issues.
